Here’s the first footage from the tour – ‘El Mar, Mi Alma’ and surfer/activist group ‘Surfers for Cetaceans’ who journeyed to Chile in lead up to the ‘International Whaling Commission’ conference in Santiago.
Led by Dave Rastovich they travelled three thousand kilometers meeting with school children, universities, marine biologists, environmental groups, mayors, ministers, artists, fisherman and surfers to share and promote ideas on marine mammal conservation and the protection of our fragile coastal environments.
Put 11 July in your diary for a great up and coming, all girl surf event ‘Chicks With Sticks’
Foxy Productions, SurfGirl and Cornwall Surfer Girls have teamed up to present Chicks with Sticks, a charity surf event at Fistral beach featuring surf lessons, the SurfGirl Surfer Boys Charity Auction (bag yourself a hottie for the night!) and a whole host of other activities to try such as art, massage, makeovers and manicures!
The big theme is girls being green, so the event will also showcase environmental art and photography projects and aim to raise awareness and support for sustainable recycling and refuse systems in worldwide surf spots.
The evening’s entertainment will be in the form of a cocktail party at the Koola Bar where girls are encouraged to recycle any old or second-hand dresses, add some sequins, glitter, feathers and party like it’s 1999!
All of the proceeds will be split between CSG’s women’s cancer charity PANTS and the Green Waves project in Taghazout, Morocco (supported by Save the Waves coalition). The event is being sponsored by Peeler, Surf Maroc and London-based escapism company Big Friday.
“Surfing’s a dedication. And, it’s a life dedication to do it. If someone was that dedicated to religion, would they call them a religious bum?”- Jesse Ventura.
Watch the clip, it’s brilliant to watch someone so outspoken on one of the most watched American shows – Larry King Live.
Billabong have just launched the B9 Platinum wetsuit, there most eco-friendly wetsuit to date.
The Eco-warrior, Rasta has launched this new range of wetsuits and if he’s backing it we can be pretty sure that the B9 is as eco-friendly as Billabong say it is.
90% of the Billabong Platinum B9 wetsuits external and internal fabrics (called the ‘B9 Flex’ and ‘B9 Thermal Flex’) are made from returned polyester products such as old fishing nets and clothing.
The balance 10% of the Platinum B9 fabric is a unique spandex fabric knitted in a way that allows the suit amazing elasticity and soft hand feel. The Platinum B9 also includes water-based inks to further reduce its impact on the environment.
It’s estimated the whole production process for the platinum B9 consumes 80% less energy and produces 80% less carbon dioxide emissions than a regular suit.
It’s only available in Australia at the moment but as soon as it arrives in the UK we’ll be getting our salty mitts on a range of B9s.
We just stumbled upon this amazing footage of a big wave in slow motion. We’ve never seen anything like it before and it stopped everybody in there tracks here at Peeler towers.
Lately there have been a ton of attempts at building more sustainable shoes. While we applaud the sea change and new green consciousness, many of the ‘eco-friendly’ shoes on offer are clunky and not all that cool. That’s why I’m so stoked on these Lakai recycled skate shoes. The Lakai Coda Select Recycled are the offshoot of Lakai’s efforts to reduce waste in their factories.
Basically, they sweep up all the scraps (leather, suede, mesh) from their first-run skate shoes, mix it with leftover factory stock, and use it all to build more shoes. Then they slap on new soles made of half re-ground recycled rubber, half new gum rubber. These are legit skate shoes. Totally comfortable and cool, plus since no two pairs are exactly the same you can be green and original.
