The Gulf Stream is flowing

Gulf Stream Surfboard

Will from Gulf Stream surfboards in Braunton – www.gulfstreamsurfboards.co.uk has just sent me pics of the amazing new board they’ve made for me.

We’ve formed a great relationship with Will at Gulf Stream, ever since visiting their Woolacombe based factory in August. I can’t recommend them enough and I urge anybody who’s thinking about buying a new board to get yourselves down to Gulf Stream surfboards and have a chat with them. Will has given me constant updates about the board and can’t wait to go and test it out in sunny Woolacombe next week!

Whales Saved

Here’s the latest from ‘Save Japan Dolphins’

The Cove

Interviews and Minke Whales

By Richard O’Barry
Campaign Director

Save Japan Dolphins Coalition

Every time I come here, the beauty of Taiji and the surrounding coastline always impresses me. It really is a wonderful place.

As I told the TV cameras today during our tour of Taiji, this place is like Norman Rockwell meets Norman Bates. The coastline, the rugged mountains dotted with shrines, and the small towns surround you (along with places like the notorious Taiji Whale Museum that supposedly celebrates whales). But just around the corner, the sea runs red with blood.

But not today, thankfully. Again, no dolphins were herded into the Cove. Every day we are here saves the lives of a few more dolphins.

The TV crews had a confrontation today with the Taiji fishermen – I stayed out of it. We heard that the Fishermen’s Union were promoting a special sale today of the meat of Minke whales from Japan’s so-called scientific research permits. So, Sky TV and Australia 60 Minutes went over to buy whale meat. But the reporters were kicked out, and the fishermen refused to talk to the media.

If you have seen “The Cove”, you will remember the character I dubbed Private Space. He was there today yelling at the cameras and reporters to leave the property. The police came and, professional as always, they asked for passports and politely instructed that the Fishermen’s Union property was off limits to the media.

It was the fishermen who called the police this time, but in the past, when I have suffered from harassment by the fishermen, the police have helped me and instructed the fishermen to stop. As I said, the police of Wakayama Prefecture are always polite and professional to us, and I repeatedly have thanked them for that.

In my interview today with the Australia 60 Minutes crew, I told them of the importance of Broome, the town in Australia, which suspended its sister-city relationship with Taiji. Before that event, the Japanese media had ignored the story of “The Cove.” Now, the Japanese media is all over the story.

But we hear that the Broome Shire Council may reconsider their decision, so we need to tell the people of Broome to support the original decision – Broome can renew its sister-city link with Taiji when the killing stops.

We continue to work to build pressure on Japan and within Japan to finally end the killing of whales and dolphins. Japan has just had a historic change in government, where the ruling political party was kicked out of office after 50+ years of control of the government. The new party in charge does not have the ties to the rural whaling towns that the former party had.

This might not mean dramatic changes in the governing of Japan, but some observers feel the Japanese public may be ready for real change here. It remains to be seen if the new government (which will take months to get organized) moves to end the subsidized killing of whales and dolphins that have generated so much international opposition. Whaling, and now the slaughter of dolphins, really is an international stain on Japan.

Please help us, at this critical time, work to stop the slaughter. Your donation will help us reach more people in Japan and bring them the truth their recent government has hidden from them.

Thank you for your support. We are making good progress in ending the slaughter of dolphins and whales once and for all. Your support is very much appreciated by me personally and by all our team in the Save Japan Dolphin Coalition.

The Drifter

We can’t wait to see the drifter!

It’s really bizarre to see Rob Machado on CNN…

British wool!

Finisterre, a small and exclusive brand located on the cliffs of Northern Cornwall, pioneering in the areas of sustainability and technical apparel for the surfer have a fantastic story about Bowmont sheep and British wool.
This is such a great story/project so we felt it necessary to blog all about it (see below).

Finisterre

“Hi Finisterre, all is well here. The Bowmonts had an MOT yesterday when I checked on their body condition. We are only a few weeks away from putting the rams in now and I have to get them “fit not fat” which means enough body condition to be healthy but not so much that they lay down fat around the ovaries etc which affects conception”, said Lesley, Finisterre’s fine wool and sheep expert in Devon.

Finisterre, the award winning ethical surf brand that set the standards in ethical business have raised the bar once again, this time working in partnership with a small farmer from Devon to bring back from near extinction a rare breed of sheep with the intention of sourcing some of the worlds finest wool right on their doorstep.

To understand where Finisterre and Lesley are right now, you have to step back to the 1970s and the ‘Macaulay Institute’ in Scotland. The institute successfully managed after twenty years to cross breed the super fine wool producing Merino, with the hardy all weather rough and ready Shetland, creating the ‘Bowmont’. Unfortunately these unique sheep, despite producing wool even finer than the prized Merino and fit for the hard life in the hills were left due to market conditions to breed with sheep all over the country and became a rare breed.

Back to the present and Finisterre, who on their search for a wool producer closer to home found Lesley, a fine fibre specialist farmer in Devon who knows how to keep a happy flock. Lesley’s been scouring the lands collecting up the last Bowmont’s, and is now working closely with the team at Finisterre to save these sheep from near extinction.

“We’ve all been up to the farm to help with shearing and lambing and understand fully what goes on, such as the attention to the husbandry and welfare, it’s a great initiative for us to get involved in, and we know with Lesley and her team, the sheep are in safe hands” said Finisterre’s design director Tom Podkolinski. Expect the exclusive and super fine Bowmont wool, to be in Finisterre’s base layers and other garments in the not to near future.

A poem for lefty's

A poem for left-handed people

A poem for leftys, originally uploaded by peeler surf.

I thought using my left hand would be easy, turns out it’s not.

Trying to do open a tin of beans got me all bothered and hot!

70% of the world have it easy, they’re right-handed.

So let’s spare a thought for the other 30% who’s hand choice sometimes leaves them stranded.

p.s. I wrote the poem with my left hand (image above) so sorry if the hand-writing is a bit crappy.

p.p.s. I’m using my left hand this week because I sliced into my right index finger with a big knife – peelersurf.co.uk/freshlypeeled/2009/09/no-pain-no-gain

No pain, no gain!

Wax making

Whilst working on our secret wax project (de-moulding a mould) I sliced into my finger with a lovely big 7″ knife!!! Ouch.

The lovely folk at the hospital glued me back together and sent me on my way.

More about the wax coming soon…

Goodbye Bhodi…

Point Break

Patrick Swayze has sadly passed away, so to pay respect to the legendary Bhodi, we’ve listed a few of his awesome (cheesy) quotes from the surf film that everybody loves, (but never admits it) Point Break.

Bodhi: Little hand says it’s time to rock and roll.

Bodhi: 100% pure adrenaline!

Bodhi: That’s, ahh… that’s a surfboard all right! Looks like a ’57 Chevy I used to have.

Bodhi: It’s basic dog psychology, if you scare them and get them peeing down their leg, they submit. But if you project weakness, that promotes violence, and that’s how people get hurt.

Bohdi: Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true.

Bodhi: If you want the ultimate, you’ve got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It’s not tragic to die doing what you love.

Long live Bhodi!
